My current major is sociology with a minor in psychology, but during the past few years I have found to have a bitter-sweet relationship with psychology. I became to love the study of behavior since I had no understanding of why particular acts were occurring around me, and also of my own. I became naturally curious which drew me deeper inside psychology to become more knowledgeable about the human brain and the activity within it. Growing up in a home viewing domestic abuse, repeating history in my own marriage, and knowing I did not want my children to go through the same challenges I began my search for answers. The cycle of abuse needed to stop and this is how I became intrigued about psychology, to try and find answers I desperately needed.
In addition, my husband was diagnosed with bi-polar about seven years ago and had a considerable alcohol problem- Captain Morgan was the drink of choice. After so many years of domestic abuse and many unanswered questions from doctors I became unraveled myself. I knew I was on my own to take a stand and go back to school since I was tired of the way my life was going. During that time I was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, and border-line personality disorder- a very low case on the spectrum. I have been in therapy for over a year and my husband and I have made huge strides and can say we are very successful due to hard work. I attribute this success not only to team-work, regular therapy sessions, but from American International College. I have been fortunate for having the most nurturing and best professors I could ever ask for.
