Diabetes Mellitus (DM) represents one of the most critical, medical issues for healthcare providers in our society today, as it is associated with an ever-climbing mortality rate, and lifelong symptoms that simply must be managed, instead of being cured. According to the World Health Organization, “the total number of diabetics worldwide will reach 333 million in 2025 from 135 million in 1995 (Kosti and Kanakari, 2012 p. 655). The life expectancy of a diabetic patient is significantly decreased by at least 10 years. Furthermore, a diabetic patient will be 2-4 times more likely to obtain heart disease and stroke. DM is the leading cause for kidney failure and the number one cause for blindness (Adult Health II Notes on DM part 1). Kosti and Kanakari describe DM as “the scourge of modern times (p. 654).” The proper management of this disease by the patient could represent the number one aspect of care, as it ensures that the patient is not only following all medication and management steps correctly, but also improving their quality and quantity of life.
DM is a disease that requires a lot more work off the field than it does on the field. In other words, educating the patient on proper management of the disease is a pertinent element of care that can significantly improve a patient’s life expectancy. According to Kosti and Kanakari (2012), “education should not be a mere transmission of information, but a dynamic, holistic, planned care based on individual’s needs (patient-centered approach). Furthermore, education promotes self-management and health-related behavior modification.” As a nurse, educating our patients should be one of our top priorities, next to caring for the patient in the clinical setting. Medical management of a patient’s disease begins once the patient has left the hospital or clinical setting. It is our job to make sure that once the patient has reached home, they fully understand their medication regimen or any other self-care tasks....
