There are several populations that interest me; however preferences include families that deal with domestic abuse and those who are disabled. Working with families that have experienced domestic violence is an interest because I have friends whose family has dealt with domestic violence in the past. The impact could clearly be seen in all members of the family. Seeing the positive impact that has been made by those who worked to help this family made this population a preference for me.
Another population that is a preference is those who are disabled. The interest to help those who were disabled started when a faculty called Edelweiss Equine Assisted Therapy opened near my hometown. Up to that point I had no interaction with those who lead different lives than me. Through the year that was spent volunteering, the changes in those that had riding therapy became obvious. Seeing the achievements of those who had lessons, make this group a continued interest. In the past couple of years a new side of this interest was shown. I have a close friend who is disabled because of seizures, which causes trouble with employers. Seeing how she has been treated made it even clearer that this population needs help and has made it a continued interest professionally and personally.
Experience with population:
I spent a year as a part time volunteer at Edelweiss Equine Assisted Therapy Group Inc. During the year of 2008 there were several duties I performed at the outdoor facility that housed Edelweiss. The starting position was to help those who came for lessons groom the horses. Later on there was the opportunity work with the clients on an individual basis during the lessons. I was shown how to live life to the fullest and how to find joy in circumstances where it may be difficult. Being able to see the changes that happened throughout that year is one experience that I will always remember.
For the last couple of years, when not in school, I have lived with a friend who has Epilepsy. She is a single mother raising two children. When living there, there have been times when she was not able to drive. I was able to help out by providing transportation for her and her children. Seeing how disabilities can impact not only the life of the one who has the disability but also the entire family made the need very real to me. The desire to make it easier, as much as possible, on those who are disabled grew through both of those experiences.
The population of families that have had to deal with domestic abuse is one where I have not had a chance to work with.
Personal / professional work experience:
During high school there were several opportunities to volunteers in the community. The sites and job descriptions can be seen in the Experiences influencing decision to become a social worker and Experience with population section. Around my junior year, the desire to get a job won out and an application was submitted to a new...
