Perhaps the most damaging and effective form of suffering is psychological. Unlike physical pain and abuse, which you can heal and recover from, verbal and mental abuse can affect you on a long time basis as words and manipulation can change you forever as well as alter your consciousness. While Ken Kesey’s one flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Shakespeare’s Othello both explore the different aspects that go into psychological warfare, such as the aggressors and their manipulation as well as the victims, the (aftermath / resolution) between the two are presented differently.
In both novels, the antagonists intensively torment and manipulate the main character. In Ken Kesey’s novel one flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, nurse Ratchet is the undeniable conspirator who is constantly demeaning and manipulating the patients on the ward. Her bases for doing so are solely based on maintaining power, control and structure but that doesn’t change the fact that her approach is cruel. She emasculates the patients, manipulates their desires and fears, and uses that to scare them into thinking they are worthless. That way they will do whatever she needs to be done. She doesn’t have to use force or even become angry as everyone is too scared to even dare challenge her tactics. One big indicator of how effective she is in manipulating the people around her is the fact that the patients are constantly spying on each other in order to write stuff in the log book that they think the nurse would want to know. These patients are friends and comrades but the nurse is able to effectively manipulate them and maintain a strong sense of control over them. She is also able to make the patients in the ward feel like they have to stay in the hospital when a lot of them really don’t.
