Knowledge Claim: Ethical judgments can impinge the way we both create the arts and the natural sciences.
Knowledge Issue: To what extent do ethical considerations constrain the way the arts and natural sciences are created?
Ethical consideration involves reasoning about the possible actions in the situation and judging which action is most ethical. A person making an ethical judgment uses reason to decide what is the best solution or decision to a problem. He/She considers questions such as “What is the best action to take?” and “Why is this particular action the best to take in this situation?” For instance, in business, ethical considerations include business practices of supply firms, bribes to secure contracts, working conditions and treatment of workers and employment of disabled people.
Arts is the expression of creative skill through a visual medium such as painting or sculpture. Art can open us up to new ideas and beliefs, and artists can make a massive impact as role models, either in a positive or a negative manner depending on how one perceives it. Art reflects life. It is a portrait of history, whether it is history of the current moment or an event in the past or something of the imagination.
The portraits of the French Revolution by David, Benjamin West's portrayal and Poussin's recreation of the Rape of the Sabine Women all attempt to provide a version of historical events. Society, in turn, can accept or reject these portrayals of true events. Sometimes, as in the case of Francisco Goya's depiction of the French behavior during their conquest of Spain, art stirs a deep hatred of a certain nationality.
Art promotes cultural diversity and also may help in reducing neighborhood crime and felony. Because art communicates with us on so many different levels, and appeals to our senses, emotion, reason, and language, it inevitably affects us more than other areas of knowledge. There are few of us who would pay to see a scientific experiment, but most of us are regular cinema goers, or visit art galleries and photo exhibitions. Due to this, it is easy to be affected by something we read or see that seems to us to be something to which we should aspire.
The natural sciences are the sciences that seek to elucidate the rules that govern the natural world through scientific methods. Ethics has caused a lot of constrains in the field of natural sciences. Many medical research institutions make use of animals for testing. Animals may be subject to experimentation useful for gaining knowledge about human diseases or for testing potential human treatments. About 20 million animals are experimented on and killed annually, three-fourths for medical purposes and the rest to test various products. An estimated eight million are used in painful experiments.
Animal rights activists are demanding government agencies to impose heavy restrictions on animal research. But this growing criticism of painful experimentation on animals is matched by a...
