Ethical belief is based on morals. So how a person determines their ethics is dependent upon what they were taught as children. As a child I was taught many moral principles that I still value and follow today. It is important however to note that not everyone moral beliefs are the same. As a child I was taught to give respect, to always be honest, and to be accountable for my actions. These are morals that my mom instilled in me and that I still honor to this day. These are also some of the same ethics I impart in my kids today. I feel if we as parents teach our kids the importance of having good morals then it will have a great impact on their success as an adult.
Growing up my mom not only verbalized the importance of having good moral beliefs but she also showed my siblings and me. We were giving chores, such as making our beds, cleaning our rooms, and washing dishes that had to be done daily. If these chores weren’t complete then there were consequences we had to face. This showed up the importance of responsibility and accountability. We were taught when adults were speaking it was impolite to interrupt and in some cases we were expected to leave the room when the conversation began to lead towards a not so kid friendly one.
As I started my transition from a young child, to a teen, to now an adult there were many ethical dilemmas I found myself in. Many of those dilemmas were during my teen years, of course. This is when peer pressure started to play a role in some of my decisions. Decisions such as should I take this drink, should I break curfew, and the almighty decision should I have sex. Of course, I didn’t always make the right choice but even when I was making the wrong choice I always felt a sense of quilt because of those morals instilled in me as a child.
