Less Facebook More Face Time Essay

Every month approximately 640,000,000 minutes are spent of Facebook. Nowadays, in the “Internet Age”, people’s lives revolve around technology. It is extremely difficult to imagine proceeding though a day without accessing the Internet or using a mobile device. Social networking has become an accustomed part of human culture, with websites such as Facebook and Twitter, which posses a unique and critical role in people’s everyday life. While people may claim that social networking helps spread news faster and improve grades, the negatives outweigh the positives. Despite the recent upsurge in its popularity, social networking has adopted a negative role in society by means of limiting productivity, fostering cyberbullying, and becoming addictive.

One negative aspect of social networking is that it wastes time and serves as a distraction to employees, which lessens their productivity. According to Nucleus Research Inc., from a sample of 237 randomly selected office workers, two-thirds of the workers accessed Facebook during working hours. The exhausted employees are easily enticed and distracted as they have more interest in what their friends are posting than in their own tedious tasks. Furthermore, after becoming diverted by receiving a message, it takes approximately 20-25 minutes to return to the original task; however, in 30% of cases, it took two entire hours to revert to the task at hand. This substantial loss of time and productivity, caused by the distracting websites, harms the company. To put that more into perspective, spending just 30 minutes daily on social media while at work would cause a 50-person company to lose 6,500 hours of productivity annually. The less productive a company is, the less successful the company will be, making it challenging for the company to excel. By acting as a distraction, social networking directly affects the success of a company adversely since it wastes employees’ valuable time and leads to a decline in productivity

Moreover, social networking cultivates cyberbulling by proving a new platform for people to post harassing comments. As reported by American Journal of Orthopsychiatry, 49.5% of students from a study reported to be victims of cyberbulling, whereas 33.7% confessed to cyberbullying others. The percentages are so great because people can effortlessly voice horrific remarks about others while hiding behind a computer screen, which they would never say face-to-face. Shockingly, American Journal of Public Health reports that victims of cyberbullying are twice as likely to commit suicide. The damage left by these virtual attacks imprints deep mental scars, which can haunt the victim for life. An example of this is 12-year-old Rebecca Sedwick, who hung herself after getting bullied through a website called Ask.fm. Some of the cruel messages included “Can u die please?” and “You’re ugly”. This saddening loss of a very young girl was an explicit result of cyberbullying through a social network....
