When I was 17 years old, I decided to leave my country in search of better opportunities, since Venezuela was, and still is, going through a phase of political polarization and major insecurity. I decided I wanted to apply to the Pennsylvania State University, and my dreams came true when I got accepted. At first, it was hard to make the decision to leave, but the experience was enriching. I graduated on May 2013 double majoring in Broadcast Journalism and a BS in Economics with Cum Laude distinction, and along the way of constructing my professional career; I discovered my interest in the field of Human Resources.
During my studies at Penn State I interned for several companies. My first working experience was at Cadena Capriles, for their radio station in Caracas, Venezuela as a part-time show producer. During the summer between my Junior and Senior year, I landed an internship at BBC Worldwide Channels in Miami, Florida, where I worked for the marketing and communications department. By that time I was sure I wanted to focus on Public Relations, I enjoyed being the mediator between the company I was representing and the journalists, and I was satisfied knowing I could help two parties reach an agreement that would benefit both.
After graduating from Penn State I decided to pursue a professional career in Public Relations in the U.S. As a Non-U.S. citizen, I had to undergo through several legal procedures to reach my goals. For example, I had to file in paperwork to get my OPT, which is a year international students get to be authorized to work in the U.S. and then look for a company that was willing to sponsor my visa.
I interned at Newlink Group, a PR firm whose target audience was U.S. Hispanics, and then got a position as an Account Coordinator at Montgomery Communications, a firm geared towards travel public relations. Both of these opportunities helped me build strong communication and interpersonal skills.
