The city of Detroit is sad sight to behold. Once a thriving city, Detroit used to have a population of approximately 1.8 million people and at one point, it was one of the well-paid cities in the United States. Now, Detroit only has a population of about 700,000. The drop in population was the consequence of job loss and many other problems that Detroit is faced with. These problems include: the city filing for Chapter 9 bankruptcy, the nearly 80,000 abandoned buildings, the highest crime rate in the United States of large cities, and the decrease in manufacturing jobs in the city. In addition, these grave problems have caused the children and next generation of Detroit to suffer, but everyone can make a difference in small ways.

Statement of Problem
As stated before, Detroit is plagued with problems. There is a wide range of vacant land with abandoned buildings and houses, disheveled properties, and other wastefully used lots. These areas call for the need to be used properly and resourcefully. Another problem deals with unemployment. Many people in and around Detroit face the problem of losing their jobs. Sometimes, these people can be given the opportunity to do community service work around the city in the unoccupied land. In addition, Detroit is an urban area; one that cannot offer access to fresh crops and healthy food. This is the case in many low-income neighbors where there is no transportation available.

Proposed Solution
Fortunately, these problems are not permanent. There are solutions and ways to improve the living condition in Detroit. The main way to positively progress the quality of living and the city is to open areas for urban farming. This is a process in which people use empty land to cultivate and produce nutritious food for people who may not have the option of fresh and healthy nourishment. Urban farming offers the native people to make their food as local as possible. Also, this process can add greenery to Detroit amongst the factory filled areas. Since there are numerous amounts of population emitted from the industrial buildings, urban farming attempts to cut down the harmful air population that has become a growing problem.

There are three main ways to how this solution will be completed. The first is about education, and can be described using the phrase, “Give...
