The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Harsh Heart And Easy Going Parenting Styles

1762 words - 8 pages

Mr. and Mrs. Harsh-Heart believe in the importance of stern discipline and impose strict rules that they expect their children to obey without question. They penalize behavior harshly, frequently with spanking. Mr. and Mrs. Easy- Going do not use punishment to enforce their rules and believe in natural consequences teaching lessons and setting limits on behavior. They have regular family meetings with their children to discuss household rules and their importance to the family dynamics. Although both forms of parenting are completely different, both ways have their own advantages and disadvantages.
Well first off to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the parenting styles between the Harsh-Hearts and the Easy-Goings, their styles of child rearing must be categorized first. Child-rearing are combinations of parenting behaviors that occur over a wide range of situations. There are four different categories of combinations in child-rearing: authoritarian, authoritative, permissive, and uninvolved. After studying these two different cases, it can be declared that Mr. and Mrs. Harsh- Heart use an authoritarian child-rearing approach while the Easy- Goings use the authoritative child-rearing style. Authoritarian child-rearing is “low in acceptance and involvement, however high in coercive control, and low in autonomy granting.” (Laura 216)Authoritarian parents have a lot of punishment and usually resort in spanking for discipline. The parents are the boss, there are rules, its tyrannical, there’s structure, and the parents are directive. Meanwhile on the other hand, authoritative is the complete opposite and it is said to be the most successful approach. Authoritative child-rearing “involves high acceptance and involvement, adaptive control techniques, and appropriate autonomy granting.” (Laura 216) In other words, there are guidelines, standards, the parents are enabling, supportive, flexible, assertive, but the relationship between the parents and children serve as a democratic.
Let’s begin first with authoritative parenting, the parenting styles of Mr. and Mrs. Easy-Going. As mentioned before this is the most recommended and successful approach for parenting. It is the most balanced between the other three child- rearing techniques. Authoritative parents are flexible but know where to draw the line, so they clearly show their love for their kids while still staying in control and in charge of the rules in the household. With that authoritative parents bond more with their children and have a stronger relationship than with other parent- child relationships. Additionally, with these flexible and strong guidelines, it teaches the child about compromise. This equal balance of middle ground makes different situations fair for the children, so it eases the child’s temperament and proves to be very successful to handle difficult kids. These parents usually use positive discipline, like what the Easy-Goings probably use. Positive discipline is...
