How Does Exercise Help You Live Longer

“Live long and prosper,” This popular quote is an example of taking over your life and prospering with good health. You have a chance to extend your life by doing physical exercise. Sitting around and lying on the couch all day will not help your health. Most video games will also contribute to lack of activity. Physical exercise can benefit you in so many ways. For instance, exercise can prevent obesity, make you heart healthy, make you stronger, and several more. If you can exercise, you will be satisfied with the results, such as good health and being strong.

Exercise improves your quality of life. Exercise does many wonders for you like preventing obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Heart disease is the number one killer in the United States. Exercising can keep that from you. It also keeps you strong and fit, which will help prevent injuries. Exercise can prevent some disabilities as well. Some examples are falls, frailty, and many more. When you exercise regularly, you sleep better, which is good for you. All of these things lead to a longer life. How do these things help you live longer?

There are many people that are disabled because they have weak bones or have crippling pain from arthritis, but exercise can prevent this. “Exercise decreased disability in people across the board; men and women, normal weight and obese people, and those over 70” (Harvard Health Letter, 1997). This proves that exercise decreased disability. “Strength-training exercises, which include lifting weights, taking a Pilates class or doing push-ups and lunges, also help combat debilitating conditions that can make old age miserable for some, such as arthritis and back pain”(Can Exercise Really Extend Your Life, 2013). This proves that just simple exercises, like getting on a rowing machine, can prevent disability. “Scientists have recently found that exercise not only helps elderly people sleep better, but also reduces the pain of knee arthritis as well”(Harvard Health Letter, 1997). If you can barely feel the pain for arthritis, then you will not be hurting as bad and can do things they could not do before. “Those who walked briskly or worked out with dumbbells and strap on ankle for an hour three times a week, were able to climb stairs, get out of cars, and perform other activities more easily and with less pain than the sedentary group”(Harvard Health Letter, 1997). Exercises such as using strap on ankle weights or dumbbells can prevent disability. Keeping your bones strong and fit can prevent you from injury.

Exercise not only prevents disability, but it also prevents obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.“Aerobic activities like walking, jogging, and swimming are shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, which is the number one killer of both men and women in the United States”(Can Exercise Really Extend Your Life, 2013). If heart disease is the number one killer in the United States,...
