Many define life differently and some can relate to others hand in hand. No matter how one may illustrate their life, no one can take that away from them. Words seem to express the thrills and hardships of life, thus, giving others an idea of how it may have been. These words could be verbally preached or written down to influence anyone. With the art of word play being written by masterful authors, books seem to help us dive into an imaginary world. J.D. Salinger’s novel The Catcher In The Rye is based on scenarios from his life put into character form, which helps the reader connect into Salinger’s childhood, early life, and adulthood.
To start off, J.D. Salinger’s childhood is described in his book The Catcher in the Rye. Salinger had a fairly typical childhood growing up in the 1920’s. When he was growing up, academic excellence was not one of Salinger’s priorities. After failing several prep schools, he finally graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy in PA (Bio.com). In The Catcher in the Rye, the main character Holden seems to not have academic excellence as he was failing 4 classes, and “they gave guys the ax quite frequently at Pencey. It has a very good academic rating, Pencey. It really does” (Salinger 6). Also, the settings reflect many of Salinger’s personal experiences and beliefs. For instance, Salinger was born in New York City and spent most of his childhood there (Bio.com). To demonstrate his understanding of the struggles of a teenager, Salinger chose a setting he was familiar with as a teenager. When Holden describes New York, he states “In New York, boy, money really talks – I’m not kidding” (Salinger 69).
In addition, J.D. Salinger’s education was a complete struggle, as his characterization of Holden Caulfield demonstrates in The Catcher In The Rye. Salinger had a difficult transition in education. Pencey Prep, the school that expels Holden Caulfield, may be based in part on Valley Forge Military Academy in PA, the high school from which J.D. Salinger graduated in 1936. Salinger served as literary editor of the yearbook and started writing stories (Grossberg). For example, J.D. Salinger resembles Holden Caulfield in many different aspects. “The most direct example of the connection is that Salinger himself managed his school’s fencing team” (Bio.com). In The Catcher In The Rye, Holden managed the fencing team as well. For example, When Holden is talking to the readers in the beginning of the...
