Women in the Workplace
All over the world, patriarchy controls and dictates the way society works. Every day stories are told of women in third-world countries who have fallen victim to said patriarchy. These women seem distant from people who live in the first-world, causing many to think that patriarchy is not present in more advanced cultures. However, they could not be more wrong. It encompasses almost every aspect of western life. Even in a country as developed as the United Kingdom, misogyny and gender inequality still exist in the workplace.

They are so far from achieving this that conditions are getting worse. Also, employers are willing to break the law to avoid paying working women a fair salary. The Low Pay Commission states “non-compliance (with the National Minimum Wage) was typically…higher for women than men” (186). Even though employers are willing to pay men the fair amount, they are much less willing to pay women in accordance with the law. Even the government can’t slow down systematic oppression. These people go out of their way to pay women less that a decent amount. By breaking the law, these employers are putting themselves and their business in danger. They would rather jeopardize the security of their business than treat women fairly. Many employers value men above women, therefore paying women less because of their misogynistic and bigoted views.
Workplaces don’t provide a safe environment for women. All too often, they experience harassment and discrimination. Sexual harassment is one of the most common forms of torment towards women in the workplace. A survey conducted by the law firm Slater & Gordon found that 60% of women had experienced a colleague attempting to kiss them and had to fend them off. 30% of women have had a senior male colleague make unwelcome and improper comments about her body, clothes, or sex life (Brown). How can a woman succeed and prosper at work if the people who have authority over her continue to abuse their power and ignore her boundaries? Another survey conducted by the same law firm revealed “six in ten women reporting that a male client had behaved inappropriately towards them” (Brown). The harassment of women in the workplace is barbaric, completely unprofessional, and wrong. Too many women are being harassed at work and it is a problem that more people need to be educated about. Men continue to objectify women and trivialize them in the workplace, acting like they are not as worthy of respect as their male counterparts. Pregnancy discrimination is another form of prejudice that is especially present in the workplace. The Equality and Human Rights Commission did a decade-long study on the discrimination of pregnant women at work and found that more than 9,000 women had made pregnancy discrimination claims during that time period (Bingham). When women are pregnant, people seem to take them less seriously than they should and look upon them as a burden. Even though pregnant women need good salaries to take care of themselves and their babies, employers tend to pay them even less than they usually pay women.
